The first class was on Social Media on January 29, 2014. Laura Rodriguez, Market Salon Specialist from SalonCentric and The Cutting Edge Hair Studio Owner and Cerritos College Cosmetology Alumni Mariloly Martinez presented to the juniors and seniors students in the Cosmetology and Esthetician program. They discussed technical and communication skills, how to pre-book and consult with clients, and the importance of Social Media for industry success. “These classes are beneficial to students because it makes them aware of what it takes to be successful in the salon. I work directly with salon owners and they are struggling to find stylists that consistently practice business skills, such as client retention through pre-booking, recommendations/ Both speakers, Laura and Mariloly discussed social media’s importance in the industry. In 2013, 65% of Yelp users used Yelp to search for Beauty and Spas. 93% of Yelp users purchased from a business after visiting yelp.[1] “Salons are getting more business because of Social media such as Yelp, Facebook, and Instagram. Today, Social media is the key way of communicating. It gets you and your company out there,” said Laura Rodriguez. Mariloly graduated from the Cerritos College Cosmetology program in 1999. She owns The Cutting Edge Hair Studio in Norwalk, California. “When I was going to school in the Cosmetology program, I was working as a receptionist at The Cutting Edge Hair Studio. Once I graduated, I was promoted to stylist. I continued to grow in my career, and I started to manage two of the other salons that my boss owned. And when he decided to sell The Cutting Edge Hair Studio, he wanted me to own it. He contacted me and he thought of me because he saw how I worked. It’s your determination that will make you successful,” To continue educating the students the next class will be held on February 20, 2014 for the Cerritos College Cosmetology and Esthetician students. At the completion of the five classes, the students will earn a Redken ‘Salon Success’ Certificate.
