Deramakot is particularly famous for spotting Borneo's five species of wild cat: Sunda Clouded Leopard, Marbled Cat, Bornean Bay Cat, Flat Headed Cat and Leopard Cat. Other regular sightings include orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and Banteng (cattle). Discovering the reserve involves a mix of light treks and jeep drives, with night drives also a particularly productive and enjoyable method of seeing some of the wildlife. Due to its fairly remote location, Deramakot sees a fraction of the visitors than other more popular areas, and three nights are spent there on the Birding in Borneo itinerary. Accommodation is at the simple but comfortable Deramakot Forest Reserve Lodge and, during the stay, you will explore the reserve by a mixture of light treks and game drives, both during the day and night, to maximise the chances of seeing a variety of bird and animal life. Other aspects of the trip include the attendance of a specialist private birding/wildlife guide throughout, Sepilok's Wildlife Sanctuaries, the observation Tower at Rainforest Discovery Centre and birding by boat on the Kinabatangan River. The holiday costs from £4895 per person for departures in May (two sharing a room). This includes international flights, all transportation, 10-nights' accommodation, most meals, activities/entrance fees and a guide.
