Xishuangbanna is home to the famous botanical gardens of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which cover an area of 1125 hectares, with over 13,000 species of tropical plants. The train line now extends over the border into Laos, and on to Luang Prabang where, every morning, hundreds of monks from the various monasteries walk through the streets collecting alms.
