Erfan Nouraee, the young scientist using innovation to advocate for social change

TORONTO - Nov. 30, 2023 - PRLog -- A York University student has created a prototype of a device that can detect the emission of electrons from metal caused by the particles of light.

Erfan Nouraee hopes the low-cost device that uses photonics technology to make high-speed internet accessible, will connect people to broadband internet.

The 21-year-old electrical engineering student believes the invention has advantages over traditional modems, which are often vulnerable to noise.

He said: "I always wanted to make something to save people's lives."

Mr Nouraee said he was "shocked" after seeing the number of people affected by the lack of broadband.

"What inspired me mainly was to make something to help residents in our rural communities access internet."

The student said he would be happy to see the Photon Detector sold commercially but insisted it needs more development work.

What was first developed for a school science fair quickly took off thanks to its innovative and thoughtful design.

He added: "I have always been interested in how things work and how they were made."

Mr Nouraee's brainchild can increase the quality of light signals, prolongs the life of the fiber-optic cables, and reduces their damaging byproducts.

The young inventor's creations had already earned him accolades, including being named the honorary title of "Inventor" and a win in his age group at the 19th Khwarizmi Youth Award.
