Nov. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- The fairly newly begun mobile phone manufacturer Dapeng, has begun selling their most recent mobile phone outside China.  One of their most recent phones that are available is the T998, that they like to call as a multimedia phone.  Dapeng made this statement due to the fact that they claim it is installed with a top of the line phone speaker system, is ready to play both MPEG3 and MPEG4 files, can offer TV viewing and FM listening, and will even let you watch video files in widescreen 16:9.

After trying this phone out, here is what Quad-Band-Phones has to say.

The Good

Fairly Solid Speakers:  As advertised, the set up speakers on the mobile phone are very decent in that they reproduce sounds loudly and clearly.  The tester from QBP has taken this phone outside inside the main station at a metro line, and just like what was said, the speakers could yet be heard.

Intriguing Control Via Accelerometer:  Instead of just switching the menu utilizing keys or the touchscreen, you are allowed to give a quick shake to control certain functions (called shake control by almost all descriptions).  Besides being a little quirky, The tester from QBP found it a novel and singular manner to manipulate many apps like music and browse the UI.

Viewing Movies In 16:9 Format:  The previously referred to accelerometer also has the capability of fast flipping digital video files from letterbox 4:3 to widescreen 16:9 simply and easily by a rotation of the phone from an up position to facing sideways.

The Ok

Worldwide Quadband Usage + Unlocked:  This mobile phone is very nice because it is carrier contract free, and can be used all over the world.

Bluetooth:  User-friendly matching with a Bluetooth headset, however the range on the mobile phone's Bluetooth was just about 1 foot, so bad for matching with different mobile phones.

The Bad

Music Intro On Power On:  The mobile phone's built in speakers are good quality, but every time the phone is turned on, the speakers go FULL blast with the bothering start up music that is impossible to mute.

Slow And Old Fashioned Mobile Internet:  You can access the internet utilizing WAP, but no 3G and not even EDGE, is a disgrace.  Likewise, wifi is not there.

God Awful Camera:  Forget satisfactory camera phone pictures, as the resolution is poor, the pictures you make most possibly will look quite bad even by camera phone measures.

No Way To Use Java Applications:  The tester from QBP believes this phone would have been a better contender if he were able to download and employ java apps allowing the T998 to get some new functions and games.

Lack Of File Support For The MP4 Player:  The movie player can only play 3GP files.  If utilizing the video camera, it informs you that your clip is an AVI file, but, very annoyingly, if you download AVI, they don't work.

Final thoughts from the tester from QBP

Just like the title suggests, this phone doesn't disappoint, if not thrill, as a media player.  The MP3 player and stereo mix is where this phone shines, but if you can find or convert some videos to 3GP format, you will find that watching movies is fun in widescreen.  Dapeng's T998 has all the normal functions you want, and has some interesting functions to boot.

Price. US$90.04
